  1. ÍSOR highlights 2013 Ólafur G. Flóvenz NAG Business Meeting May 2nd 2013 on-board M/V Polarlys ICELAND GEOSURVEY

  2. ISOR´s background in Iceland ICELAND GEOSURVEY ISOR is not a typical geological survey but a governmental research institute in the field of natural sciences and energy sciences. As these activities requires mostly geo-scientific research ISOR´s activity is mostly about geoscience and related to geothermal energy. ISOR is supposed by law to operate on competitive basis on market and has no direct funding from the state budget. All projects are made on contractual basis and profit goes into basic research. EU projects in the energy sector have been important to maintain basic research capacity. There is no formal Geological Survey in Iceland but ISOR has acted as such for many decades.

  3. Geological survey activities in Iceland: ICELAND GEOSURVEY • ÍSOR, Staff 75, geoscientist 50-60: • Geothermal research and services • Geophysical exploration and monitoring • Geological mapping • Geochemistry including corrosion and scaling • Environmental studies • Engineering geology including rock and soil avalanches • Well logging & reservoir physics • International training and lecturing • Groundwater • Offshore geology

  4. Geological survey activities in Iceland: ICELAND GEOSURVEY • Iceland Meteorological Office (IMO): • Staff ~150, geoscientist: 20-30. • Monitoring of natural processes and issue hazard warnings • Weather • Rivers • Earthquakes • Snow and rock/soil avalanches • Flooding • Glaciers • Volcanic eruptions

  5. Geological survey activities in Iceland: ICELAND GEOSURVEY • Icelandic Institute of Natural History: • Staff ~60, geoscientist: ~ 7 • Geological mapping • Geological collection • Geosites • Altogether there are around 100 geoscientists in these three research institution.

  6. Major change for ISOR ICELAND GEOSURVEY From September 1st 2012 ÍSOR was moved from Ministry of Industry to Ministry of Environment and Natural resources. All the three institutes that deals with geoscience now belong to the same ministry Re-organization of the institutional structure could be expected in the near future.

  7. Politics will affect the process ICELAND GEOSURVEY The present government of the Social democrats and Left-Green party did loose the power and more than 50% of their representatives in the parliament in elections five days ago. The Centre Party (Liberals, Senterpartiet) got a big victory and are almost as big as the Independence Party (Conservative, Höyre), each with ~25%) It is now expected that we will get a government led by the Centre party, either with the left or right parties or even a minority government.

  8. On-going change in the activity of ÍSOR ICELAND GEOSURVEY The activity in the geothermal industry in Iceland is very low presently but might take off again after one or two years. This has affected ISOR greatly the income in ISK did lower of almost 40% after the banking collapse in 2008. ISOR has been increasingly active on international geothermal market with research, services, training and consultancy. Projects related to foreign countries have increase from 8% of the total in 2008 to 40% in 2012.

  9. Some possible fields of co-operation ICELAND GEOSURVEY • Geothermal research • Methodology and infrastructure • Well logging activities • Exploration methods • Geochemical laboratory analysis • Rock physics at high temperature and moderate pressure • Monitoring and remote sensing • Offshore studies
