Picture Books Picture books are profusely illustrated books in which the illustrations are essential to the enjoyment and understanding of the story Picture books may be of any genre, including poetry. Illustrations and text share the job of telling the story. Picture books are a format of children’s literature rather than a genre.

Picture Book Categories ABC Books : • almost all have a theme • earliest varieties of illustrated books for children • not suited to teach ABCs/phonics (generalizations with sounds/phonemes) • meant to introduce fascinating words and interesting concepts and to entertain Counting Books: • earlier types of picture books • helps in learning basic numbers, counting and discovery • some beautifully illustrated and use unusual and intriguing objects for children to count

Picture Book Categories Concept Books (informational): • introduces single focused idea to children (colors, shapes, objects) • informational books are sometimes called concept books • helps children think about ideas • some concept books have no plot but repeated elements in the illustrations tie the book together Participation Books: • involves children in an activity that goes beyond reading the text • books are often seen as an extension of play (clapping, unison recitation, chanting, moving to the rhythm)

Picture Book Categories Predictable/Pattern Books: • can be bridge to independent reading • predictability due to rhyme, repetition, illustrations • emphasizes repeated word/story patterns • familiarity helps children “read” books Wordless Books: • carefully sequenced illustrations tell story • vehicle to practice language experience approach • helps to learn front-to-back, left-to-right progression • older students can write words

Picture Book Categories • Beginning Reader Books: • limited text on each page, large print, double spacing and short sentences • words are short and familiar and short chapters, yet well-written stories • all genres, including poetry are included • Picture Storybooks: • most plentiful and popular kind of picture book • most Caldecott are picture storybooks • illustrations and words are equally responsible to tell story

Picture Book Categories • Engineered/Toy Books: • physical structure is altered by pages popping-up, restructuring pages of book • tactile experience • can be very simple (younger children) or very complex • Baby Board Books: • durable books/ cardboard • some wordless and some concept • single phrases
