Wednesday 12-11-13

WU:

  • What type of Boundary exists between the Nazca & South American Plate?
  • What geologic features could you predict are found at this boundary?
to do
To Do:
  • Check Boundary WS
  • Fold/Fault Notes & Activity
  • Folds and Faults WS
by the end of class you should be able to
By the end of class you should be able to:
  • Explain & Model the formation of; -Anticlines, Synclines, & Monoclines -Normal Faults, Reverse Faults, & Transverse Faults
  • Describe which types of folds & faults are found at each type of boundary.
folds faults
Folds & Faults

Folds and faults are deformations in rock layers caused by the forces that squeeze, pull, or push on the rock.

folds
Folds
  • Rock Bends but does not break
use your hands to represent the formation of each type of fold
Use your hands to represent the formation of each type of fold.

What type of stress would form these?

faults
Faults
  • The stress is too much for the rock & it breaks.
  • You will see a crack in the rock.
  • The 2 sides of the crack will have shifted around the crack
slide9
Fault

A Break in the rock due to stress.

slide10
2 Parts to a Fault

What are the 2 sides of a fault called?

slide11
2 Parts to a Fault

Footwall- the side of a fault that looks as if you could run up the incline.

Hanging Wall- the side of a fault that is at a very steep incline and looks like someone could hang from it.

how to use footwalls and hanging walls to determine type of fault and therefore type of stress
How to use footwalls and hanging walls to determine type of fault and therefore type of stress.
  • Find how the hanging wall moved in relationship to the footwall.
  • Think of a playground slide. Is it normal to go up or down a slide?
  • It is a normal fault if the rocks slid down the slide
  • It is a reverse fault if the rocks go up the slide.
slide13

Identify Type of Fault

Reverse Fault – not normal to go up slide

What force would cause this motion?

(Force is needed to push it up the slide)

slide14

Normal Fault –normal to slide down slide

What force would cause this motion?

(Need to separate walls for it to slide down side)

slide15

Strike-Slip Fault – moving horizontally (sideways, not up or down)

(Force is needed to push 2 plates in opposite directions laterally)

slide16
Complete your Fold & Fault Manipulatives using the cards. Call me over to check it when you think you have it all correct.
can you
Can you:
  • Explain & Model the formation of; -Anticlines, Synclines, & Monoclines -Normal Faults, Reverse Faults, & Transverse Faults
  • Describe which types of folds & faults are found at each type of boundary.
