  1. n_TOF activity:2004 experiments & more • Set in operation of the n_TOF TAC • Capture measurements • Fission measurements • Summary of 2002, 2003 & 2004 activity • Perspectives for future (prelim. draft) alberto.mengoni@cern.ch

  2. n_TOF TAC for (n,g) measurements • High detection efficiency: ≈100% • (to be compared with 5% of C6D6 or 0.1% of Moxon-Rae) • Good energy resolution • (direct background suppression mechanisms • based on combined multiplicity and energy • deposition analysis) • 40 BaF2 crystals • 12 pentagons & 28 hexagons • 15 cm crystal thickness • Carbon-fibre 10B-enriched capsules • Full Monte Carlo simulations • all EM cascades • capture events for BG determination n The n_TOF Collaboration

  3. n_TOF TAC for (n,g) measurements • Structure mounted in April-04 • 4pgeometry: end of May-04 • 1.5 month commissioning • Au(n,g) & other standards First measurement with a radioactive sample started in August 2004 237Np(n,g) sample www.cern.ch/n_TOF The n_TOF Collaboration

  4. n_TOF TAC for (n,g) measurements • The n_TOF DAQ • A specific pulse shape analysis routine exists for every detector: Silicon Flux Monitor, C6D6 detectors, PPACs, etc. • For the BaF2 signals: • The TOF is determined by means of a simulated Constant Fraction Discrimination • Both the fast (t=0.7ns) and slow (t=620ns) scintillation components are fitted to a Maxwellian and an exponential (with a fixed t=620ns) shape, respectively • Excellent a/g discrimination • Pileups occurring 300 ns after the first signal are recognised and analysed after performing the necessary baseline correction High data transfer rate: ~ 2 TB/day The n_TOF Collaboration
