Thematic Session Proposal for the 3rd joint session of the EMEP SB/WGE 11-15 September 2017 Thomas Dirnböck (on behalf of WGE chair and vice chairs) Joint Meeting of the Extended Bureaux EMEP-SB and WGE 20-23 March 2017
Thematic Sessions • To streamline the cooperation between EMEP and the WGE on the most important and emerging issues • Thematic session 2016: Interaction between air pollution and climate change; Benzo(a)Pyrene; Ozone Issues • Thematic session 2017 (Monitoring) • Improving the interaction between ecosystem monitoring and modelling to better inform the WGSR and the EB about trends and impacts of air pollution
Objectives • Review of the LRTAP monitoring network in order to • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the network • Identify data gaps • Regarding empirical evidence of air pollution effects • Regarding its usefulness for modelling (effects/impacts) • Regarding new challenges (e.g. N dry deposition, P in waters, climate change..) • Identify common and complementary data • Review reporting data (ECE/EB.AIR/WG.1/2008/16/Rev.1)
Questions • Do we have the right data to support the WGSR and EB? • Air pollution impacts/recovery, dose-response, „new“ issues such as biodiversity; interactions of air pollutants with climate change; for running models; … • How can we integrate and improve our monitoring network • Cooperation between ICPs and Centres; between monitoring and modelling (CCE, JEG-DynMod); between WGE and EMEP in general; … • How can we increase the participation of countries and the density of monitoring sites? • Should weprioritize monitoring? • To address the most important policy questions; to deal with decreasing funding
Target Groups • The focus is on TFs and Centres which follow an ecosystem approach • ICP-Waters • ICP-Forests • ICP-Integrated Monitoring • And TFs and Centres for modelling • WGE: ICP Modelling and Mapping, the CCE, and JEG • EMEP: particularly MSC-W
Proposed content for presentation in Sep.-Meeting • Description of the monitoring network • sites, geographical distribution, sampling frequency, representativeness • Purpose of the network • eutrophication, acidification, biodiversity, air quality monitoring, outlook to the future, etc. • Environmental compartments of interest • atmosphere, soil/soil-solution, waters, biota, cross-cutting, etc.
Proposed content for presentation in Sep.-Meeting • Key datasets • data management, data availability, usefulness for modelling, data reporting (according to guidelines ECE/EB.AIR/WG.1/2008/16/Rev.1) • Key gaps (critical review) • In monitoring of effects • In the provision of model inputs • Collaborations between TFs and Centres • Existing cooperations and outlook to the future
