Indiana University School of Medicine Office of Medical Education Indiana, USA IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  2. Questions • What is the constructivist model? • How does a constructivist model help facilitate learning? • What challenges are commonly seen in trying to implement a school-wide curriculum approach? • What is ANGEL? • How does the constructivist approach, coupled with the curriculum management tool, ANGEL, help support the organization of curriculum across disciplines? IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  3. What is the Constructivist Model? “An approach to teaching and learning based on the premise that cognition (learning) is the result of mental construction in an environment designed to support that learning.” • North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (2001). • http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/envrnmnt/drugfree/sa3const.htm IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  4. Conventions of the Constructivist Model • Embed all learning activities in a global event; • Provide multiple entry levels; • Create a legitimate task; • Plan the task to reflect the complexity of the environment; • Sustain and challenge the learner’s thinking; • Support the evaluation of ideas; • Provide time for reflection • Jones, D. (2000). Cabrillo College, Aptos, California. Adapted from Barbara Seels (1989). The instructional design movement in educational technology. Educational Technology, 29 (5), pp. 11-15. http://www.cwu.edu/~ceps/constdef.htm IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  5. How Does a Constructivist Model Help Facilitate Learning? • It allows you to understand the needs of your faculty and students. • It allows you to assist them in defining those needs so they may develop attainable goals for teaching and learning. IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  6. It allows one lead person to coordinate the activities of all faculty toward a common goal. • It helps coordinate the construction of material in a sound pedagogy. • It allows for the evaluation of methodologies in both a formative and summative manner to facilitate future improvements in curriculum. IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  7. Challenges to School-Wide Curriculum Management • Lack of a global approach • Lack of curriculum coordination • Lack of knowledge sharing • Lack of curriculum development expertise • Lack of resources • Lack of effective web-based tools • Complexity of design • Extreme learning curve • Lack of support IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  8. What is ANGEL? • A web-based curriculum management system that: • Provides a personal and customizable portal for each user. • All classes/groups the user is registered in are represented on the portal. • One stop. • One password. Total access. IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  15. IN TOUCH • Create Chat rooms. • Add links. • Read course mail. • Send course mail. • Manage Team Files (you may divide your users into teams and direct specific files to a specific subgroup). IUSM – Office of Medical Education and Curriculur Affairs

  16. TOOLS • Upload grades for distribution to individual portals • Access the learner profiles and students’ grades. • Access ungraded items. • Check when and how often users have logged on. • Check activity of forums and mail. • Batch load large groups of users. • Export your course, or elements, to a disk for storage.
