  1. Structural Analysis: Completed Tasks • LAT System Level • LAT Environmental TIM Support • A success  plans were well received with some additional analysis to be performed to work out details, e.g. the large items are • Identify which parts of LAT not qualified before dynamics tests (EBOX center I/F…) • Identify additional instrumentation needed (strain gauges, primarily) • Trade acoustic test mounting (RMB or Flexure mount) • LAT Instrumentation Progress • Accelerometer purchase order submitted by I&T (Lee) with expected delivery by 1/14/05 • Contingencies (additional channels needed for qualification verification) accounted for • Supported Systems Engineering regarding requirements traceability and verification • Provided LAT FEA Model information in support of FDLC2 data recovery

  2. Structural Analysis: Completed Tasks • LAT Subsystem Level • TKR Subsystem • TKR Flight Design • Supported resolution of various insert strength and fastener torque issues • TKR Additional Studies • Reviewed tray manufacturing SOW • Completed some insert pullout testing to validate analysis assumptions; testing not completed due to restrictions on UTM use • EBOX Subsystem • No activity • Grid Subsystem • Took a new direction for the Grid Static Test plan; initial review with GSFC promising • New plan dramatically reduces test complexity • Lower cost – simpler, may be feasible to test in-house • Shorter schedule – less load cases result in less set-up time • Does not compromise qualification verification; takes advantage of lower loads and resulting high margins • Supported Grid NCRs and other issues • Bushing recessed to far resulted in 4.4% reduction in MS • Torque values for “weak” fasteners adjusted without compromising grid acceptance criteria • Completed RMB keensert testing; B-basis strength is significantly higher than needed; write-up in process • MGSE • Final structural analysis report almost complete • High frequency acoustic analysis performed to evaluate acoustic test configuration. Still need to perform low frequency analysis trade study

  3. Structural Analysis: Current Tasks In-process • LAT System Level • LAT Dynamics Testing • Evaluate low freq acoustic loads into LAT in two configurations • LAT Thermal Distortion Analysis • Final analysis and reporting of results pending further discussion ECD=Dec-04 • MGSE for Integration Analysis • MGSE Final Report in-progress ECD=Oct-04 • Radiator MGSE and SC simulator for acoustic test will commence in Sep-04 • Shipping Container Analysis • Container analysis complete, Final report in-progress ECD=Oct-04

  4. Structural Analysis: Current Tasks In-process • LAT Subsystem Level • TKR Subsystem • Baseplate distortion analysis • After the dithering process at Pisa, it was noted that the baseplate took on a permanent set • There was concern that when the baseplate is installed in the vibration lab, the enforced displacement BC will generate high loads in the TKR or flexures • Other analysis support? Flex cables? More torque issues? • Support TKR Tower-A testing in Italy • EBOX Subsystem • Evaluate EBOX loads/accels when LAT is subjected to sine input • TPS component bonding issue (analyze for +3dB input) • Grid Subsystem • Shear plate qualification test complete; report in-process ECD=Nov-04 • Grid Static Test plans/procedures/STE ECD=Dec-04 • Continue with newly developed, simplified test plan • Proof Test Spectrum provided flexures ECD=Jan-05 • Test Grid ECD=Feb-05 • Support RAD and XLAT issues, as needed ECD=Ongoing

  5. Structural Analysis: Conclusions/Remarks • Conclusions • Everything is going well • Remarks • Schedule is in a constant state of flux – planning must stay extremely flexible • Safety restrictions at SLAC affect analysis in that • All structural tests on the UTM are restricted • Crane operations are restricted • Drop tests are restricted • Safety restrictions have some schedule impact, but work-arounds can mitigate this somewhat (but not too much longer)
