Bellringer- 10/8/13 In your notebook… • Think of a character in a book or movie that you absolutely love, or love to hate. • Describe that character as best you can using as many details as possible.
What is characterization? • The process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.
How is a character’s personality revealed? • Through direct characterization and indirect characterization. • Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. • Indirect Characterization shows things that reveal the personality of a character.
5 Methods of indirect characterization • Use the mnemonic device of STEAL to remember the five types of indirect characterization: • Speech: WHAT they say (words that a person speaks says a lot about them), HOW they say it (accent, voice tone, speed) • Thoughts/Thinking: What is revealed through thoughts and feelings? • Effects on others: What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? • Actions: What does the character do? How does he/she behave? • Looks: What does the character look like? How does he/she dress?
Additional methods of indirect characterization • Feeling (body language, voice, tone) • Reactions (Are they popular or alone? Are they leaders or followers?) • Emotions (Are others attracted to them or move away?) • Under stress (When we are stressed our behavior often changes to something less thoughtful. Stress is thus a further test of personality and reveals more of the person's character.)
Using our exemplar… • Take out “Thank You, Ma’am” again. With your shoulder partner, complete the following: • 1. Identify all the direct or indirect characterization for Mrs. Jones OR Roger. • 2. Create a Facebook page for one of them based on your findings.
