Appearances Count! • According to The New Professional Image, one college career center surveyed 150 employers and found that the number one reason for rejecting an applicant after a first interview was a low rating on presence and impression. * The New Professional Image by Susan Bixler, 2005

Interview • What to Wear: • Normally expected: Tailored,dark-colored matched suit with a shirt-tie or blouse • Exceptions to the rule: More creative companies, like advertising agencies, allow for more colorful options • What to Bring: • Portfolio/pen with notes and questions • Several resumes on quality paper • Business cards • Transcript, if requested • What not to bring: • Water bottles • Backpacks

  30. Image Tips: General • Properly tailored suit • Professional laundry and dry clean recommended • Style hair conservatively • Have your shoes shined

  31. Image Tips: General • Limit your jewelry • Take out piercings (for women, a pair of earrings is acceptable) • Conceal tattoos • Avoid fragrance • Avoid smoking immediately prior

  32. Image Tips: Men • Wear a belt & dark trouser socks • Proper tie length • Clean shaven or neatly groomed facial hair

  33. Image Tips: Women • Shoes should be closed-toe • Wear hosiery (non-patterned) • Style hair neatly (recommend pulled back) • Conservative make-up • Avoid revealing tops (lacy camisoles are a NO for interviews)
