  3. Description • In order to make this image, I first made a copy of the orange man. Then I eliminated the layer of lines that covered the image by using the healing brush treatment. Then I made a layer copy from the Atlas picture and moved it as a new layer on top the orange man. In order to make it take shape on the body I used the warp tool under the transform section and I warped it until it matched the body but was still visible as a map. Then I took the image of the earth and made it the background image. I used the erase tool at 100% opacity to delete the white around the orange man so the earth image would be visible. Then I made another layer using the text tool so I could put "Atlas Shrugged".

  5. Description • In order to make my image I made a second layer and then I moved it onto the background of the space image. Then I took the clockwork image and I faded it, by changing the opacity. Then to create the the multiplied look of the grandfather clock I created multiple layers of it and then on each level I made it smaller using the free transform tool. Then I free transformed the old man picture and faded it. Also for the grandfather picture and the old man picture I used the polygon magnetic marquee tool and then erased the extra picture that I didn't want around it.

  7. Description • In order to create this image I used the free transform to make it larger and then the marquee tool and then erased around the crystal ball. Then I made the people whispering larger too through free transform and then I changed the opacity to fade the image. Then for the background I solarized the tarot cards and free transformed it to be larger. I also used the text tool.

  9. Description • The third and final image I created as a part of the pictorial essay was another Shel Silverstein classic, Falling Up. I used a landscape with equal proportions of the ground and the sky. The hardest part of this project was to cut and crop people so that they looked as if they were actually falling up, and not simply flipped upside for the sake of the picture. It required lots of careful attention to cropping, erasing, resizing, and opacity in order for the image to appear cohesive and complete. I believe that the ending product reflects the spirit of the book, and falling up.

  11. Description • The book cover I chose to literally interpret was The Grapes of Wrath. To create this image I used the picture of the vineyard as a background layer. After that I used the magnetic lasso tool around the picture of the single bunch of grapes and enlarged it. I also used the eyedropper and brush tool to add onto some areas. Then I used the magnetic lasso and layer via copy to move to pictures of devil horns onto the bunch of grapes. I used free transform to resize and rotate them, as well as the eraser and brush tool to clean up their edges. Then I used the lasso tool and layer via copy to move the angry face onto the bunch of grapes. I used free transform, the eraser tool, and edited the hue/saturation, the opacity, and the coloring of this layer. Then I copied the title of the book off the cover and moved it onto the corner of my image and erased the corners.

  13. Description • The book cover I chose to literally interpret was The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I created an image which shows a huckleberry with fish fins looking through binoculars on a raft in a river. To create this image I used the picture of the raft in the river as my background layer. Then I magnetic lassoed an image of a single huckleberry off the image of berries and used free transform to resize it and move it onto the raft. Then I magnetic lassoed and used layer via copy to get the fish fins off the fish image and put them onto the berry. I resized and rotated them with free transform as well as using the eraser. Then I used two different images for the two arms which I lassoed and copied onto the berry and free transformed. Finally I found a flag image which I lassoed then copied onto my image and flipped it horizontally as well as resizing and rotating. I had to make a second copy of the cloth part of the flag in order to enlarge it and make sure it stayed within the image’s boundaries. I placed the second copy on top of the first flag layer. Then I copied the book title of an image of its cover and moved it onto the flag. I free transformed it and altered its transparency. I also used the blur/smudge tools to better blend some areas.

  15. Description • In order to create this image, I first opened up the image of the rye field. I duplicated this layer and then opened it up in a blank image. This now became my background layer. Then, I proceeded to use the brush tool to change the color of the sky in the image. Once that was done, I opened up the catcher image and used the magnetic lasso to copy it into the main "rye field" image. I then did the same thing with the score board and the baseball bat. Once they were all in the main image, I used free transform to size them and place them in the appropriate place.

  17. Description • In my second image, I used the book, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein as my inspiration. This one I knew would be simple. I wanted a picture of the tree with human features as well as a boy. I found a perfect image with a great massive tree and a boy already a part of it. The main issue was the text that was a part of the original image. I utilized the stamp tool to remove the writing and create a realistic looking replacement. I had some issues finding a face and creating it to look like it was a part of the tree. But I eventually found a face and was able to soften it using the opacity tools in conjunction with the eraser.

  19. Description and Sources • My first image created was from the story, The Secret Garden. The idea was to create a mysterious and lush looking garden, with a subtle looking entrance. To make this more literal, my idea was to overlay the garden with a face making the ‘shhh’ sign with her fingers and lips to indicate the secret aspect. My vision came to life through a series of steps and collaborations. I started with the hanging purple flowers from the top, upon realizing that only one side had the desired effect, so I created a second layer copying the first, rotating it and placed it on to the left side as well. This created some parallelism in the image. From there I inserted an archway, which I adjusted to fit correctly under the flowers. The arch added an effect of depth to the image. Afterwards, I added the gate in the lower left corner as the entrance to the secret garden. I finished by adding the face on top of all of this and playing with the opacity and such to have the effect I desired. I am pleased with this final product; it was very close to the image in my head.

  21. Description • This image was created was from the book, The Secret Life of Bees. To create this image I first got all the smaller pictures I would need. I used the layer via copy tool to make a copy of the CIA image. Then, I brought it into a blank photoshop image and made it my background by merging the two. Next I used the elliptical marquee tool to select the CIA circle. I then used the layer properties to change the color to a lighter yellow. By playing around with the hue and saturation I was able to get the color I desired. Next, I used the magnetic lasso to get the part of the spy bee that I wanted to use. (I cut out the antennas). Using layer via copy, I made another layer and brought it over to the main image with the CIA background. Using free transform I made it bigger and rotated it in order to place it in the appropriate location. The same thing was done with the other bee picture. The liquify tool was also used throughout the image.

  23. Description • To create this image I used the picture of the girl walking two dogs as a background. I used the layer via copy tool and magnetic lasso to move copies of the moon images on top of the dogs and used the eraser, smudge, and paintbrush tool to cover what was still visible of the dogs. Then I copied the clay faces onto the moon and altered the hue/saturation as well as transparency. Next I used images of dogs legs which I copied onto the moons and altered their hue/saturation as well as using free transform. Then I used the magnetic lasso to take the words off the image of the book cover and used the magic eraser tool, eyedropper, and paintbrush to get rid of the blue surrounding the red words.

  25. Description • This image was created from the book, To Kill A Mockingbird. First, I took the forest background and used the eraser tool to change the opacity. I thin used the magnetic lasso to take the mockingbird and place it in the image. I decided to put the mockingbird in the upper left corner so that the hunter could point his gun at the bird. I then made sure that the mockingbird layer appeared on top of the forest background. Using the free transform tool, I resized and rotated the mockingbird. Next I used the magnetic lasso tool to select the hunter. Using layer via copy I was able to bring him onto the the main image. I then resized him and used the eraser tool to change his opacity.
