  1. Continuing Cooperation on IMT Standardization Steve Mills, President, IEEE Standards Association

  2. Highlight of Current Activities • IMT-Advanced • “WirelessMAN-Advanced” developed (2006-11) specifically for IMT-Advanced • IEEE 802.16m published in May 2011 • IEEE contributed extensively to ITU • IEEE provided the “Global Core Specification (GCS) to ITU • ARIB, TTA, IEEE, and WiMAX Forum published “transpositions” • Close collaboration and MoUs required

  3. Strategic Direction • Continue to maintain IEEE 802.16 in IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced • Ongoing 802.16n (high-reliability) and 802.16p (machine-to-machine projects) • Continue to be the early standardization pioneer of new technologies • e.g., first 802.16 OFDMA was completed in 2002; now that technology is the basis of both new IMT-Advanced alternatives

  4. Challenges • Both the IMT-2000 and IMT-Advanced technologies are in one standard • Hard to maintain • No clear view on major future technology directions • Time required to absorb the newly-standardized technologies into broad IMT deployments

  5. Next Steps / Actions • Continue with semiannual updates of IEEE 802.16 technology in IMT-2000 • Plan for ongoing collaborative technology updates and maintenance of WirelessMAN-Advanced • Continue formal “WirelessMAN-Advanced Transposing Organizations” (WATO) activities to ensure harmonized approach • Provide a home for innovative new ideas, and nurture them
