  1. B43b CONTINENTAL DRIFT LAND ON THE MOVE

  2. CONTINENTAL DRIFT • Idea that the land (continents) has moved to its current location and is still moving • Proposed by Alfred Wegner. • Supported by fossil and rock evidence

  3. PANGAEA • huge “super-continent” • all land masses joined together (B1, Figure 5)

  4. Edges of continents fit together like a puzzle. THEREFORE: continents must have been together PUZZLE-LIKE FIT (B1, Figure 6)

  5. Reptiles could not swim fossils found on now distant continents THEREFORE: continents must have been together REPTILE FOSSILS (B2, Figure 7)

  6. 1 - spores (like seeds) could not float across an ocean fossils found on now distant continents THEREFORE: continents must have been together FERN FOSSILS (B2, Figure 7)

  7. 2 - grow only in warm, moist climates fossils found on Antarctica THEREFORE: Antarctica must have moved (B3, Figure 7)

  8. same mountain range found on now distant continents THEREFORE: continents must have been together ROCK CLUES (B3, Figure 8)

  9. ASSIGNMENT • Make a table with two columns. • Label the columns: “continents have moved” and “continents were together.” • Add the evidence that fits in each column.
