  1. 1983 The Personal computer wins the award for Machine of the Year

  2. Time Magazine said the Personal Computer is the revolution the information age has been waiting for.

  3. They were almost right! • The real revolution which would not become obvious until just a few years later, was… • …………..THE INTERNET…………... • The PC simply revealed the demand for connectivity and communication. • Once users got online, there was no turning back.

  4. Sun Microsystems makes a bet on the internet • In the early 90s Sun Microsystems developed the Java programming language for a future where every home appliance has a micro processor that could talk over the internet. • Smart appliances controlled by users via the internet. • Turn on your house lights or air conditioning from the office via your desktop computer.

  5. They were almost right! • By the late 90s it was clear that home appliances were not going to become the smart, online devices that Sun had envisioned. • Java enjoyed some novelty acceptance for writing Applets which execute in a web browser. Eventually other technologies replaced Applets.

  6. Actually, they got a lot right • By the turn of the century academia was experimenting with Java as a teaching language. Soon it became #1 in high schools and universities. • The now exploding internet began using Java as a server side technology to generate dynamic HTML for websites. Javascript (no relation) was being used on the client side of the web. • Java found a niche on the internet.

  7. Email, Commerce & Entertainment

  8. Java, Java everywhere • Oracle purchased the rights to the Java language from Sun and Java is the a core part of the engine of their SQL products. • Android phones use Java as their OS and for the apps that run on the Android platform. • Many other kinds of devices now use Java as their imbedded control language.

  9. Industry Loves Java • Many, many companies are hiring new application programmers to write apps and basic productivity programs. • Java is not just a teaching language. It is a real world, highly utilized platform for nearly every type of job. • Java is not going away anytime soon.
