Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862 • A system to provide funds to establish, support and maintain at least one college in each state to teach agriculture, mechanical arts and military sciences. • “Liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions of life.” Teaching Justin S.   3. Provided federal funding for state experiment stations Purpose was to conduct research to improve production agriculture Hatch Act of 1887 Research William Henry Hatch

  4. Smith-Lever Act of 1914 • Established Cooperative Extension Service • Purpose was to provide and extension of the land grant college to local communities • Placed “agents” of the university in local counties Extension
