What is PESI? • Joint initiative of two Networks of Excellence: EDIT and MarBEF • Funded by the European Commission (May 2008 – April 2011) • Led by the University of Amsterdam • Partnership of 40 institutions in 26 countries with the aim to define and coordinate strategies to enhance the quality and reliability of European biodiversity information

  4. Three pan-European species checklists to begin with: • European Register of Marine Species (ERMS) • More than 30.000 valid (accepted) names • Euro+Med plantbase (E+M) • More than 50.000 accepted (valid) names • Fauna Europaea (FaEu) • More than 175.000 valid (accepted) names

  5. The EDIT Common Data Model • follows the TDWG Ontology • supports all nomenclature codes • fulfills the data domains’ requirements

  6. and • provides a large library for tools ande-services: • Import and export routines • Data integrity checker • Taxonomic Editor

  9. Integrity Checker Level 1 - Syntax of terms (e.g. syntax of scientific names and URLs) Level 2 - Structural integrity (e.g. completeness of name or reference objects) Level 3 - Relational integrity (e.g. taxon relations) Level 4 - Dataset integrity (e.g. classifications in checklists)
