  1. Anecdote • A short account of a particular incident or event used as support for a statement made • For example… • At the beginning of The Crucible, Reverend Parris accuses Abigail of dancing in the woods AND speculates why she was fired from the Proctor household. Abigail then provides anecdotes in regards to what really happened. For instance, she starts narrating chimerical stories to justify her actions. She also claims that Goody Proctor is a liar. She uses these short stories/accounts to SUPPORT her claims.

  2. APHORISMS • Aphorism is a brief, cleverly worded statement that makes a wise observation about life. • They may be used to entertain, instruct, and inspire. • They can be on any subject matter. Franklin provides what’s known as his 19 aphorisms that demonstrate his legendary humor, insight into human nature, and philosophy of life (seen on page 84)

Examples of Aphorisms—write down 3 of these examples. • All things come to those who wait • Don’t judge a book by its cover • Easier said than done • He that is not with me is against me • If you snooze, you lose • Live and learn • Old habits die hard These are all cleverly-worded statements that provide a universal truth.

  4. Practice Look at page 74 and match the following statements to its’ appropriate aphorism. Write down the statement and the line NUMBER that you believe it corresponds to. • Be careful what you wish for • Good fences make good neighbors • Seize the day • Give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he’ll eat forever • A rumor goes in one ear and our many mouths
