Composition of: Cupric Sulfate Hydrate
Composition of a Hydrate Hydrates are: • Ionic compounds that have water as part of their structure. • Purpose: to determine the formula of copper(II)sulfate hydrate
Materials • Porcelain evaporating dish
Materials • Crucible Tongs
Materials • Microspatula
Materials • Ring stand apparatus with Bunsen Burner.
Materials • Copper(II)Sulfate hydrate
Safety Precautions: • Copper sulfate is a dangerous chemical • Wear apron • Wear safety goggles • Wash hands • Keep hands away from face
Procedure • Heat dish with hottest part of flame For 3 minutes. (NO CHEMICAL) • Using crucible tongs, remove dish and let cool. (ON THE COUNTER) • Find the mass of COOLED empty dish. • Measure out a quantity of copper sulfate between 1.00 and 1.50 grams.
Procedure • Gently heat dish + chemical • Avoid decrepitation • Increase heat and continue until Copper sulfate turns gray-white. • Microspatula may be used to “spread out” chemical.
Procedure • Allow dish to cool for about a minute. • Using crucible tongs, find the mass of the anhydrate.
Data table • Mass of dish • Mass of dish + hydrate • Mass of dish + anhydrate • Mass of hydrate • Mass of anhydrate • Mass of H2O lost
Data Table • % H2O in hydrate • Moles of H2O • Moles of anhydrate • Ratio of moles of H2O to anhydrate • Formula of the hydrate • Balanced equation CuSO4 * xH2O ---- CuSO4 + xH2O
When finished: • Clean and put away equipment • Dispose of copper sulfate in container supplied by instructor. • Wear goggles while washing dish
Lab Write up • Title • Purpose • Materials • Procedure • Data Table Show calculations • Conclusion: your explanations and questions…….
Conclusion questions • The true value for % water in hydrate is 36% water, what is your experimental error? • Besides safety concerns, why does the dish need to cool before you find the mass? • Why must the mass of the copper sulfate anhydrate be found immediately?
Conclusion questions: • Explain how this experiment demonstrates the law of definite composition. • Define: anhydrous, hygroscopic, decrepitation, deliquecence. • What is a decomposition reaction?
