  2. Summary of my (lack of) Ganga experience • I made my first attempt at using Ganga two weeks ago • previously just watched others or used EDG/LCG commands • Installed Ganga 4.4.7 on PPD machines • Version 4.4.8 released last week • Ganga seems to have all the functionality I would want – but I was disappointed by how cumbersome it is to use. • I sent Karl Harrison some detailed comments for discussion at Today’s Ganga User Forum. • I put some newbie instructions and notes here: https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Sandbox/TimAdyeGangaNotes Please do not publicise that page – it’s naïve and quite RAL-specific. Ganga

  3. Ganga options • Ganga has three user interfaces • Python command-line • Most documentation refers to this • It really is very verbose • examples have ~10 commands to submit 1 job. • GUI • Easier to use • Still quite a bit of interaction just to submit a job • Run at RAL – too slow to use from lxplus over the network • Shell command-line • Submit a job with a single command • Still need several options, but seemed clear to me • Lots of printout (same as 1). Why not just “job 12 submitted”? • I much prefer the shell interface • I used that for submission, but the GUI to monitor jobs and retrieve output (not supported in shell interface?) Ganga

  4. Criticisms and problems • Why no “bjobs” command? • No web monitoring tool like Panda • GUI has the similar functionality, but you need to start it up • Would be nice to view logfiles from the web, rather than downloading them and filling up home directory • Release kit at RAL does not include Grid packages • AtlasLogin assumes it is there so removes local stuff from PATH • It is in CERN installation. Is kit installed correctly here? • Could not yet get splitter to work • Could not yet get dq2_get to work on PPD machines • Used Ganga GUI to retrieve output ROOT files • dq2_get worked at CERN – getting my output there was easy! • More comments on my notes page... Ganga
