  2. What are some things you already know about clay?

  3. Clay • Figures, tiles, and tableware are a few examples of items made out of clay. • Most common: Bowls, vases, and tableware. • Some are considered fine art, others decorative, industrial, or artifacts.

  4. Clay • Pottery can be made by one individual or by many in a factory.

  5. What is emphasized in pottery? • Shape

  6. What is emphasized in potter? • Decoration

  7. What is emphasized in potter? • Carving and other methods

  8. What is emphasized in potter? • Glazing

  9. History of Clay • Ceramics can be found in almost every ancient developed culture of the world (like plaster!) • Majority of the time, pottery is the only surviving remains of these cultures.

  10. Major Cultures Involved with Clay • Chinese • Cretan • Greek • Persian • Mayan • Japanese • Korean • Modern Western Cultures

  11. Ancient doesn’t mean old! • Many styles from these cultures are copied even in pottery today.

  12. Ceramics in America • Oldest ceramics found in America date back 5,000 – 6,000 years ago.

  13. Ceramics at the Beginning • Every ceramic piece was hand built till the 4th millennia B.C. Then a form of the wheel was invented. • Early pots were made by pinching or coil-built.
