Vocab • Slab – a large flat piece of clay rolled out by a slab roller or a rolling pin • Coil – rope or snake-like piece of clay • Slip – watery clay used to help stick things together • Score – to scratch or texture the surface of clay to help it stick together – like Velcro • To Wedge – kneading clay on the wedging tables to get any air bubbles out
Vocab • Greenware – dried clay that has NOT been fired • To Fire – the act of putting clay in the kiln to heat it up and turn it to stone • Kiln – machine/oven that heats up clay • Bisque ware – clay that has been fired but not glazed • Glaze – liquid chemicals applied to bisque ware and then fired, turning to colored glass • Earthenware – fired and glazed pottery or art
Vocab • Template – paper or cardboard cut-outs of each side of a project that are measured to the desired size then used to trace onto clay • Seam – where two pieces of clay meet • There should be slip/score and a tiny coil on every seam!!! • Leather hard – clay that is dry enough/strong enough to stand on its own but is still bendable or pliable.
Directions • Draw your design in your sketchbook • Create a template out of paper • Wedge clay • Roll slabs (Check for air bubbles!) • Cut out template & dry to leather hard • Slip/score to put it together • Decorate!!!
