American Sign Language • ASL is considered the fourth most common language in the United States. • Ophir has had sign language on its campus for more than 20 years! • Benefits of Learning a Second Language: • narrows achievement gap • benefits academic progress in other subject areas • enhances a student’s sense of achievement • enhances career opportunities • benefits higher order, abstract and creative thinking • enriches and enhances cognitive development • benefits self confidence and cultural sensitivity throughout their lives

Ophir’s Sign Language Curriculum • Pre-3rd: Signing Time • Classroom Edition Basic ASL signs for the school environment to get the communication ball rolling • 1st-3rd FairviewDolch Words and Reading • Bridges-multiple meaning words • 4th & 5th Signing Fun and Sign with Kids!- ASL vocabulary, phrases, games and activities • 6th-8th: Signing Naturally-Delves deeper into the formal nuances of American Sign Language as a language with syntax (word order) and grammar unique to a visual language
