  2. Background • Hermes (Roman name Mercury) was the messenger of the gods and guide of dead souls to the underworld.

  3. Family • He is the son of Zeus and Maia. He is also the god of flocks, roads, trading and thieves. • He had four children

  4. His father, Zeus, made Hermes his personal messenger. Hermes wore a winged cap and sandals which helped him to fly.

  5. Hermes invented the lyre on the day he was born. • Lyre – a stringed instrument
