  2. Prayer??? • What does it mean to pray? • How can we pray?

  3. What is Prayer? • Prayer is a way of staying in touch with God and deepening our relationship with Him • Prayer takes time and effort • Prayer should be a daily activity, taking time to speak and listen

  4. What is Prayer? • The answer to our prayers are not always what we think they may be • The answer to our prayer might not always be what we want • God’s view is infinitely bigger than our view • In answering our prayer, God does not take away human freedom

Nighttime Prayers • Now I lay me down to sleep,I pray the Lord my soul to keep;If I die before I wake,I ask the lord my soul to take. • Thank you lord for another day,The chance to learn, the chance to play.Now as I lay me down to sleep,I pray the Lord my soul to keep.Please, guard me Jesus through the night,And keep me safe till mornings light.But if should I die before I wake,I pray the Lord my soul to take.And should I live for other days,I pray that God will guide my ways.Amen

  10. Prayer of Petition • Probably the most common type of prayer • Asking for things for yourself • We bring our requests before God for ourselves, our friends, or our family. • At Mass petitions are read but petitions can be said at anytime. Examples?

  11. Prayers of Intercession • These prayers are very similar to petition prayers. In prayers of intercession we are praying for others • Praying through others • Virgin Mary • St. Anthony (when something is lost) • St. Jude (patron Saint of lost causes) My prayers for this class

  12. Prayer of Thanksgiving • Giving God Thanks! • Gratitude for things that happen • Giving thanks for the positive things or people in your life What can we be thankful for?

  13. Prayers of blessing and adoration • Adoration praises the greatness of God • Ask for blessings (for ourselves and others) • Be a blessing Matthew 14. 13-21

  14. Prayer of Praise • Express praise, honour, love and glory to God • Recognizes immediately that God is an awesome God • Giving God glory for just being Him Our Father

  16. Pathways of Prayer • Meditation • Prayer through music • Shared Prayer (Church, morning announcements, class prayer) • Charismatic Prayer (focusing on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, offerings) • Prayer through Movement (gestures or dance)

  17. Pathways of Prayer • Traditional Prayers (Our Father, Hail Mary, Apostle’s Creed, Rosary) • Shared Spontaneous Prayer (when something surprising happens so a group prays together)
