  5. What are biobased products? …commercial or industrial products composed, in whole or in significant part, of biological products or renewablematerials, forestry or agricultural (including plant, animal, and marine materials).

  6. Why choose biobased products? • Increase our energy security and independence • Improve our environment, inside and out • Improve our economy

  7. What is BioPreferred? BioPreferred makes it easy for you to make a difference by identifying and establishing new markets for biobased products.

  8. What is BioPreferred cont.? • Federal Procurement Preference Program • Federal agencies and contractors are required to purchase qualifying products • Voluntary Labeling Program • Will allow manufactures and vendors to use a USDA logo to identify qualifying products

  9. Program Requirements • Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (FSRIA) (2002 Farm Bill) • Energy Policy Act of 2005, sections 205 and 943 • Executive Order 13423 • FAR Updated - Nov. 7, 2007 • Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 (2008 Farm Bill)

  10. USDA’s Role • 1. Establish Program Guidelines • 2. Designate BioPreferred Items - or generic groupings of biobased products that receive Federal procurement preference • 3. Lead by example

  11. Variety of Biobased Products • Over 14,000 commercially available biobased products • Many products that can be used in: • Construction and Grounds Maintenance • Cafeteria/Food Service • Custodial Services • Vehicle Maintenance • Operations and Maintenance

  12. Status of Item Designation • To date, 33 items designated (not including several subcategories) • Designated items to date represent: • 2541 products • 649 manufacturers/vendors • 1/5 of known market
