Recruitment Values • It is an adult decision: this is why you are here; • It takes a village: better results come from collaborative efforts; • Nobody is going to care for your son better than you (Who used to take your son to the doctor for shots at 3?) • Be involved but be nice: it is a small world; • When it comes to college decisions: be a manager, get involved, get real and GET AN EMAIL ACCOUNT; • You are the back up singer, your son is in the spotlight; • Options are our friends (but they take work); • It is about your family- not the club, the coach, the director, ana or anybody else; • Playing D1 Sports is a job, a fun job, but nevertheless a job. Recruited players are Athlete Students.

  5. Reality: Family Goals • Best academic school • Best vb program • Best scholarship situation • Best fit: big/small, urban/rural/suburban, exclusive/inclusive • Best opportunity to play • Other?? Tradition, greek, research, etc. • What is the best strategy for YOUR family?

  6. Scenario #1- Best Academic Scenario “I want my son to get into the best possible school and vb is the means towards that end…” GPA: competitive for the target school SCORE: competitive for the target school HS preparation: competitive for the target school Hook: Sports. Recruited or NOT!!!

  7. Scenario #2- Best volleyball experience “I want my son to get the best vb preparation and exposure…his dream is to play for the U.S.A Olympic Team…” Coaching at college for his position Ability to play Support systems

  8. Scenario #3- Money “Recruitment is essential for our son to attend college…financially, he has to get a scholarship…” Sky is the limit Don’t be picky, but the better your son is academically AND athletically, the more options he will have!!!

  10. I. Understanding the Universe • Men’s Volleyball: NCAA, NAIA and NIRSA • We will focus only on NCAA: that’s where the money’s @ • 1:91 Ratio between men’s and women’s.

  11. II. Market Research • Who has volleyball programs? Sent it to you. • Which schools would the student be happy at? • Major • Research • Academic programs • Social life/culture: UNIGO AND COLLEGE PROWLER • Which schools would the athlete be happy at? • Competitive vb program • Coaching • Opportunity to play • Support and culture

Continue • Do these schools need him athletically? • Study the roster: Height • If your MB is 6.0 and the other MB are 6.6 and above… • Study the roster: Location • All players are from MI and OH • Study the roster: Majors • All the players are communications study and your son wants to study marine bio • Become an expert at your sons position: • Liberos and passers are after thoughts, but great for late bloomers • Setter are seasonal and seldom appreciated • MB and OH are alway$$$ welcome with open arm$$$$

Select Targets • Depends on the position, select a # • OH: 10 • MB: 10 • OP: 10 • Passers: 18 • Setters: 14 • Three academic tiers: • Top (let’s not make these reach)- 3/5/4 • Middle- 3/5/4 • ICGIN- 3/5/4 • If not sure about college community • Urban (Berkeley) • Suburban (SMC) • Rural (UCM)

  14. IV. Prepare marketing materials • Letter of introduction: do inventory of assets with son • Email • Bio • Website: godaddy, wix.com, etc. • Skills video: youtube. Shoot, edit, upload, be done. • NCAA registration

  15. Video Production • Use equipment you can upload film after you shoot; • Set up youtube account; ipads allow you to upload directly to youtube; • Mute it so you don’t have to deal with sound; • Have your son edit film; • If you really, don’t want to deal with it, ask me.

Boys that will play D1 How? • Google: NCAA Eligibility Center • Web1.ncaa.org • NCAA College Bound Student Athlete • New Account – top right corner • Type Email • Don’t close window • Open new window and check email • Verification code will be sent to email • Verification code is good for 7 days • Copy from email to NCAA window • Create your Account: follow the screens

  17. Achieving NCAA Eligibility Juniors When you take ACT/SAT: enter 9999 as score recipient. Take college bound courses School will need to send transcript Seniors Take ACT/SAT as needed Take college bound courses Be smart

  18. V. Constant Contact • Send letter October 15 • Send email October 29 • Send email after PL 2 • Send email after PSAT/SAT • Send email after any event • Send email after each PL and QLF • Put it in you home calendar

Options=Good • Keep options open so you can negotiate the best deal for your son • School 1 vb wants your son enough for a full ride • Your son is ok with school 1 but girlfriend will be there • School 2 vb wants your son enough for 50% • School 2 offers the academic field of his interest, it is located is the best location in the universe (far away from girlfriend) • He really wants to go to School 2 • Use School 1’s offer the get the most out of School 2 IF you can afford it. • If you let go of School 1, you will never know what the final offer at School 2 may have been. • UNDERSTAND: how badly is your son needed (not wanted)!!

  21. Calendar of Recruitment Activities • October 9- College Orientation 7:30-9:00 • October 16- “I am Being Recruited!!”- 5:00 by appointment • October 23- “What’s Next?” 7:30-8:30 p.m. • November 6- FAQ 7:30-9:00 p.m.

  22. One Last Messages for your Sons • Clean up your FACEBOOK- TONIGHT!!! • Don’t throw away your hard work; • You have options because you have made good decisions, don’t stop making good decisions now.

  23. A Different Path • Ivy’s and the new Ivy’s • Admissions is boss • Player has to be a scholar first and foremost • Athletics is a great hook • Testing: get as close as you can to 2200. • Subject tests: 2 or 3 • GPA boosters • $$ are there any facts???
