1. SPM review COSMO General Meeting, 5September 2013 Sibiu

2. Science Plan We keep our committment to high scientific standards of the COSMO developmet: • with this, we discuss and prepare the updated version of the COSMO Science Plan for the period 2015 – 2020 • the discussion was taking place during the recent COSMO year involving all COSMO levels: the WGs, SMC and STC • it was especially active during this General Meeting • your involvement is truly appreciated! • it is important that we all actively participate in the current but also future discussions

3. Science Plan The guidelines for the SP are defined by the STC: • it confirms that the main, overal goal of the consortium is steady: „the model system for the short to very short range for operational and research purposes with a convective-scale resolution, and with EPS at its core” • in consequence, the STC requests that „COSMO scientists should focus their development on convective scale NWP, including data assimilation, physical parameterizations and EPS”… • …while linking the COSMO developments with that of ICON, according to the COSMO strategy • it is expected that the new SP will define the priorities for further develoopments, implemented within new PP/PTs

4. Science Plan The work on the Science Plan is already advanced: • the WGCs prepared the essentilal outlines for expected developments within the WG areas • the STC provided the feedback to the guidelines and discussed the main goals of the SP • together with the feedback provided by you during the GM, it will be now used for preparation of the SP document by the end of the year • it will be given to the external reviewers and the feedback will be discussed again with the aim to incorporate it into the final edition of the SP: stay active! • it is expected that the STC will accept the new SP during the next GM in 2014

5. COSMO V5.0 Preparation of COSMO common version V5.0 was one of the main priorieties of the consortium in recent time: • the goal was to unify the main developments of all COSMO communities: ART, CLM, NWP • the aim was to prepare flexible tool for current diverse model applications, and to lay solid foundation for its further efficient development • preparation of the code was not easy as the developers wanted to incorporate the growing requirements of all communities and state of the art tools, while keeping high quality standards required by the source code management rules

6. COSMO V5.0 Recently, the new COSMO 5.0 and associated INT2LM 2.0 were submitted for approval: • on 19 August COSMO SMC reviewed and evaluated V4.28 and 4.29 as the base for COSMO 5.0, and INT2LM V1.22 and 1.23 as the base for INT2LM 2.0 • in result, the SMC decided to accept the unified software • this Monday, the STC decided to approve the common software as the new unified COSMO reference version • that constitutes very important achievement of all our cooperating communities, congratulations!

7. COSMO V5.0 • that was possible due to very hard, demanding and dedicated work of the whole group of developers, coordinated by the COSMO Source Code Administrator • thank all of you very much, we appreciate your work and dedication! • very special thanks go to Uli Schättler, for the leadership, enthusiasm and optimism dispite all the difficulties and problems, thank you!

8. Source code management We subsequently implement measures required by the source code management standards: • the PT on preparation of the NWP test suite is accepted by the STC and starts with the new COSMO year • a technical testing suite is prepared and will be implemented for practical application within the new COSMO year • growing TAG tackles the problems and issues to coordinate development of the COSMO software (like e.g. coordinated implementation of GRIB2 standards), thank you!

9. PP/PT activities And there is the essential core development work organized within WGs and PP/PTs: • PP CORSO consolidates its results and tools to serve the Sochi 2014 Olympics • PP KENDA develops its assimilation tools and extends intensive testing with support of Italian and Swiss groups • PP POMPA receives final STC OK to prepare fully capable COSMO version for GPU architecture and works on new coding paradigm for the model dynamical core • PP VERSUS2 aims at full operationalization of its software as well as at laying solid foundation for further code developments

10. PP/PT activities The relatively new PP: • PP CALMO (Calibration of COSMO Model) aiming at methodology for objective tuning of parameters of the model • PP CELO (COSMO-EULAG Operationalization) for operationally capable COSMO model employing EULAG dynamical core ...

11. PP/PT activities will be joined by recently accepted • PP COTEKINO (COsmo Towards Ensembles at the Km-scale IN Our countries) aiming at development of covection permitting ensembles within the consortium • PT ConSAT (Consolidation of Surface to Atmosphere Transport) aiming at improvement of that crucial aspect of COSMO model • PT NWP Test Suite will implement this important tool for our source code management system

12. Scientific develolpment Finally, to repeat: we want to keep high scientific standards and promote scientific discussion and cooperation • you are very much encouraged to do it on every level of our activities (WGs, PP/PTs, individual work) • we want to encourage and support, in between: internal and official meetings/conferences organized within the scope of COSMO works and plans scientific visits of COSMO scientists and of leading experts to COSMO participation in international conferences to show interesting COSMOresults There are means, please apply!
