  6. IMPACT OF HMT At PSLE: • Grades are converted to points ONLY if pupils are offered SAP schools: Distinction 80 & above - 3 points Merit 65-79 - 2 points Pass 50-64 - 1 points

  10. WEAKNESS IN ORAL Reading • Limited word recognition (CL and TL) • Flat intonation Picture Description • Wrong use of grammar and vocabulary when describing the picture Topic Conversation • Insufficient details; unable to express thoughts & feelings

  11. SCHOOL SUPPORT FOR ORAL • Oral packages • iMTL portal to enhance pupils oral skills • Good phrases/list of bilingual word provided for pupils

  12. WEAKNESS IN COMPOSITION • Inappropriate interpretation • Incorrect sentence structure • Lack of descriptive words/good phrases • Uninteresting introduction • Uninteresting or inappropriate ending

  13. SCHOOL SUPPORT FOR COMPOSITION • Composition writing packages/worksheets • Teaching of writing technique • Model essays selected as reading materials • Good phrases/descriptive words provided

  14. WEAKNESS IN COMPREHENSION • Inability to understand the requirement of the questions especially the Higher Order Thinking questions • Incomplete answers • Inappropriate format of answering questions

SCHOOL SUPPORT FOR COMPREHENSION • Encourage pupils to read widely (subscription to ML /TL newspaper) • Comprehension package/worksheets • Comprehension strategy • Read passage and pick up important info or clues (e.g. ICLUES for ML) • Understand the questions and read the choices carefully (MCQ) • Answering technique for different type of questions (Open ended)

HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD • Encourage your child to read Mother Tongue storybooks (read widely across different genres, including model essays) • Encourage you child to read the Mother Tongue newspapers • Expose your child to community organised programmes e.g language/festival activities/ activities organised by the National Library

HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD • Provide experiences for the use of Mother Tongue Language at home / with family members • Watch and listen to good TV and radio programme in Mother Tongue Language • Watch and discuss the news on TV • Promote a “Speak Mother Tongue Day” at home • Converse with your child using grammatically correct complete sentences • Encourage him/her to read aloud from any storybook or news articles to you. • Family discussions during grocery shopping / planning for holidays etc.

  19. HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD • Ensure that your child completes his/her corrections and learns from the mistake/s made studies for spelling/dictation • revises all the work done, especially worksheets, lesson packages & supplementary booklets
