  5. Changes to 2013 papers:background The outcome of the Ofqual review was that “modifications were made to the structure of sections within some of the question papers in order to manage the risk that a narrower route than intended could be taken through the teaching and assessment.”

  6. Changes to 2013 papers:in practice Centres will now have to teach ALL the topic areas specified for each study-in-depth/thematic papers. Regulators required that these changes be made for the 2013 examinations.

  7. Changes to 2013 papers:in practice (2) Question 1 doesn’t change at all. It is source-based. In 2013 it will test topic area 3 Question 2 is now compulsory. It has three sub questions. Question 3 is now compulsory. It is the familiar essay-style question.

  8. Timing In 2013, all GCSE History unit exams will last for 1 hour 15 minutes Paper 1 (units 1 and 2) will be on Monday June 3rd Paper 2 (Unit 3) will be on Monday June 10th

  9. SPG marks The regulators asked all awarding organisations to include marks for the assessment of spelling, punctuation and grammar in ALL awarding bodies History GCSE examinations from June 2013 onwards. The weighting has to be around 10%. Consequently 3 marks have been added to each of the 10 mark essay question found on each exam paper.

  11. Linear or unitised? In common with other awarding organisations, WJEC was asked to revise GCSE specifications to make the assessment linear. ALL centres in England will be required to use linear GCSE specifications from first award in 2014 (first teaching of two-year courses in September 2012). In Wales, centres will be able to choose to follow either of the two options available for courses starting from September 2012: linear specifications (first award summer 2014), where candidates sit all their exams at the end of the course existing unitised specifications where assessment may be taken in separate units at stages during the course as is currently the case

  12. Strengthening agenda The regulators asked all awarding organisations to review their qualifications with regard to specific issues which would ‘strengthen’ the qualification. WJEC History was resubmitted to the regulators on May 22nd 2012 and a reply was received on August 23rd. Any accredited changes will be for first teaching from September 2013.
