  1. Psychoanalytic Clinical Concepts The Unconscious

  2. Commonsense and Negativity There is nothing in the id that could be compared with negation; and we perceive with surprise as an exception to the philosophical theorem that space and time are necessary forms for our mental acts. There is nothing in the id that corresponds to the idea of time; there is no recognition of the passage of time, and – a thing that is most remarkable and awaits consideration in philosophical thought – no alteration in its mental processes is produced by the passage of time. (Freud, 1933, p. 74).

  3. Ethical dimensions • The ‘good’ as touchstone of ethics • The call to ‘duty’ to be ethical • The ‘distribution’ of resources

  4. Material dimensions • Aphasia • cerebral localization (Broca) • John Hughlings Jackson, two axis • Organised to unorganised • Automatic to conscious

  5. Material dimensions • Aphasia • associations (Freud) • Word presentations - object associations • Word presentations - thing presentations

  6. Clinical dimensions • Address to the analyst is always mediated by the effects of the unconscious • A therapeutic alliance is affected by the unconscious • Interpretations by the analyst will be unconsciously mediated • Transference interpretations will be heard as coming from an already invested past figure
