  1. The Sun: The Primary Source of Energy for All Living Things

  2. Flow of Energy Food Pyramid: The amount of usable energy that is available to the next trophic level decreases.

  4. AUTOTROPHS: Use photosynthesis; Chloroplasts build sugar HETEROTROPHS: Cellular Respiration; Mitochondria break down sugar

  5. ATP Chemical energy stored in food turned into heat and ATP. ATP delivers energy where ever energy is needed in a cell. Adenosine Triphosphate

  6. ATP Cells can give off the energy stored in ATP by breaking the bonds between the 2nd and 3rd phosphate groups: Adenosine Triphosphate ATP becomes ADP which will be re-energized for use again. (Like a rechargeable battery)

  7. Photosynthesis Chemical Equation: Plants use the sugars from photosynthesis to make other carbohydrates, such as starch & cellulose.

Photosynthesis: Light Dependent Reaction • Takes place in the thylakoid. • Chlorophyll captures energy from sunlight and uses it to remove e- from water. • The water splits into Oxygen and Hydrogen ions. (O2 is waste gas) • NADPH picks up electrons and H+. • ADP gets energized to become ATP. ATP

  12. Photosynthesis: Light Independent Reaction (Calvin Cycle) • Takes place in the stroma. • The energy from ATP is used to run the reaction. (no light is needed) • Carbon dioxide, the hydrogen ions and electrons carried by NADPH are converted to a simple sugar - glucose.
