The United States Marine Corps was founded in 1775 in Tun Tavern, Pennsylvania.
The Continental Congress approved and signed the resolution calling for two battalions of Marines to fight for United State’s independence.
Samuel Nicholas was then appointed the first Commandant of the Marine Corps.
In 1776, the Marines conducted their first amphibious raid against Fort Nassau in the Bahamas. Successfully capturing large quantities of gunpowder the British were using for battle against the 13 Colonies.
Since its founding, the Marines have taken part in numerous significant battles, ensuring independence for the United States.
