  2. Press the information button to learn settlement words Start! Press the start button to look at changes of 3 cities overtime. Press me Press me too

  3. Some interesting settlement words! Press me if you want to go back • Function of settlement – function of settlement is the reason why it was built. • Industrial town/city - town/city where people make things from factories. • Port town/city – town/city where people send their goods (things) to other city or country by ships • Market town – town/city where people sell or buy things. • Resort town – town/city where people come in holiday to play and rest. (E.X. Hawaii) • Settlement pattern – settlement pattern is the shape of the settlement. • A dispersed settlement pattern- means that all the buildings are spread out. • A nucleated settlement pattern- means that all the buildings are grouped together. • A linear settlement pattern- means the buildings are found in a long line.

  4. What are settlements? Settlement is a place where people live. Settlement doesn’t stay the same forever. They Change over time!

  5. Changes of London overtime 1900, 1950 and 2000 of London

  6. London Bridge in 1895 I can see that London people used horse carriage as their transportation in 1900s. I can also see that most of the buildings are modernizedand that there are very few tall buildings. Buildings and houses look very nucleated, so I think population of London was very high.

  7. Factories running in London at 1900 I can know that London was industrial town(make goods or manufacture). Because I learned that industrial town have factories and there is factory in this photo of London. I think this factories helped on developing London’s industry but caused problem of air pollution and causing smog.

  8. Central Business District of London (1952) In this photo, I can see shops, office, people, cars and buses. Shops and offices are built very linear around the road. One thing that changed from 1900 is London people’s transportation. In photos taken on 1900 there were only horse carriage for their transportation but in this photo, I cannot see any horse carriages and I can only see Buses and cars which were not in the photos taken in 1900s.

  9. Port of London (1952) This photo shows us London’s port. Port is where we send goods to other cities(export) and countries oversea or get goods from other cities and countries(import). London’s port look very big and organized.

  10. Photo of CBD in London (2000) London’s CBD changed a lot. Many old buildings got demolished and big, tall buildings and skyscrapers built in there, so buildings in CBD became less nucleated.

  11. Change of New Yorkovertime 1900s, 1950s, 2000s of New York

  12. New York in 1900 In first photo I see many modernized buildings. All of the buildings are built close to the road and have same sizes, so buildings look very linear together. I can see some shops in down part of the buildings. In second photo, I can see Many tall buildings that are little bit nucleated, wide roads with buses passing the road. I also can see train and train station a the right side. In this two photo, I learned that New York’s transportation were different from other cities. New York people used gasoline bus and mini taxis when other cities used horse carriages, buildings were modernized and structured well but there were no high buildings or skyscrapers.

  13. New York’s function in 1900 This two photo are evidence that New York was or is market town where people come to buy things or sell things to the customer.

  14. New York in 1950 New York changed a lot! Many skyscrapers are built, roads became more wider, people started using cars instead of horse carriage or mini taxis and buildings got more nucleated. but I think the most interesting changes of New York that is shown on this photo is people’s dressing. Because in photos taken in 1900, people were wearing gentle clothes like suits, long hat and long skirts, but in this photo, men are wearing clothes that are not suits or hats that men wore in 1900s and women are not wearing very long skirts that they wore in 1900s

  15. CBD of New York (2000) I think there is not that many changes in New York’s CBD. I think three thing changed. First one Is population. Because in the right photo, street and road is full of people and cars. In 1950s photos there were many people living in New York, but I haven't seen street road full of cars and peoples, so it means that population is very high. Second that changed is that buildings got more nucleated. Last change I think is pollution of air. Air in left side’s photo look like it’s very polluted.

  16. Berlin 1900s,1950s and 2000s of Berlin

  17. Berlin in 1900’s Buildings are medium sized and look very old. Roads are very wide and clean and I can see horse carriages and gasoline buses passing the road. There are not that many people walking in the street. Population seem to be not that high.

  18. Factory in Berlin (1900’s) This photo tells us that Berlin was industrial town where we make things in that time. I cannot see any machines making things instead of peoples. Berlin’s factories are different from London’s factory, where some machines replace people. I can only see people making things with their hand.

  19. Berlin in 1950s City look very horrible after the world war 2… I feel sad. Most of the buildings are demolished by a bomb. I am curious that berlin can recover again and be normal city and also curious will berlin kept being used as a industrial city.

  20. Inner-city of Berlin in 2000s Berlin looks like it’s recovered. I can see many buildings and houses that are nucleated around river. I can see hundreds of houses, so I think population increased a lot. I think Berlin is still used as a industrial town because I can see many factories running in this photo. Air look like it’s polluted. I think it’s because of factory’s smoke.
