  2. PURITANS JOHN ROLFE A religious group of colonists who wanted to purify the Church of England. • He introduced a mild tobacco which saved the colony of Jamestown.

  3. JAMESTOWN MAYFLOWER COMPACT Founded in 1607, it was the first successful English colony in the Americas. An agreement signed by the Pilgrims to create fair laws for the good of the colony.

  4. MERCANTILISM JOHN SMITH An economic theory that the only purpose of a colony is to create wealth for the mother country. • He was the leader of Jamestown.

  5. PILGRIMS TRIANGULAR TRADE • Religious group who fled England to escape religious persecution. Route developed to avoid the Navigation Acts and trade with Africa and the West Indies.

  6. INDENTURED SERVANT HEADRIGHT A servant who promised to work from 4 to 7 years in return for someone paying for his trip to the New World System rewarding colonists with land if they paid for their trip from Europe.
