  1. USING MINERAL RESOURCES

  2. THE USES OF MINERALS… • Minerals are the source of gemstones, metals, and a variety of materials used to make many products.

  3. Gemstones- Usually, a gemstone is a hard, colorful mineral that has a brilliant or glassy luster. People value gemstones for their color, luster, and durability, and for the fact that they can be rare. Gems are used mainly for jewelry and decoration.

  4. Rubys • Diamonds • Sapphires

  5. Metals- Some minerals are the sources of metals such as aluminum, iron, copper, or silver. Metals are usually not as hard as gemstones. Metals are useful because they can be stretched into wire, flattened into sheets, and hammered or molded without breaking.

  6. Metal tools and machinery • Metal filament in a light bulb • Aluminum foil • Steel beams

  7. Other Useful Minerals- People use materials from minerals in foods, medicines, fertilizers, and building materials.

  8. Talc is ground up and made into talcum powder. • Calcite is used in optical instruments such as microscopes. • Quartz is used to make glass and electronic equipment. • Gypsum is used to make wallboard, cement, and stucco.

  9. PRODUCING METALS FROM MINERALS… • To produce metal from a mineral, a rock containing the mineral must be located through prospecting and mined, or removed from the ground. Then the rock must be processed to extract the mineral.

  10. A rock that contains a metal or other useful mineral that can be mined and sold at a profit is called an ore.

  11. Prospecting- A prospector is anyone who searches, or prospects, for an ore deposit. • Mining- A miner removes the ore from the ground. There are three different types of mines:

  12. Strip Mines- Earth-moving equipment scrapes away soil to expose ore.

  13. Open Pit Mines- Miners use Earth-moving equipment to dig a tremendous pit and remove more deposits.

  14. Shaft Mines- Shaft mines are used for ore deposits that occur in veins. They have a network of tunnells that extend deep into the ground, following the veins of ore.

  15. Smelting- Ores must be processed before the metals they contain can be used. In the process of smelting, an ore is mixed with other substances and then melted to separate the useful metal from other elements the ore contains.
