Climate / Terrain • Located in the north of the North American continent • the largest country in North America • the 2nd largest country in the world • Most populated along the border with USA • Climate: have four very distinct seasons • Short summers can reach 95 F • long, cold winters can reach -13 F • Terrain: mostly plains with mountains in west and lowlands in southeast • Mount Logan is the highest mountain in Canada  • Named after a Canadian geologist

Brief history • 1000 the Vikings briefly made a settlement, then left due to natives • 1603 French began to colonize and build missions • During the American revolution Canada was loyal to Great Britain • July 1st 1867, gained independence • 1896 gold was discovered in the Yukon • September 10th 1939, entered into World War II • Provided support in the English Channel during the invasion of Normandy (D-Day) • 1993 first woman elected as prime minister

Interesting facts • Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October • Garter snake capital of the world • The Canada/USA border is the longest international border in the world • In Vancouver residents take a plunge in to freezing water, “polar bear swim” (takes place on new year's day) • Basketball was invented by a Canadian in 1891 • Canadians have a heath care system predicated on a patient's medical need as opposed to the ability to pay.
