Discover the four main moon phases: New Moon, 1st Quarter, Full Moon, and 3rd Quarter. Learn how to identify the moon's illumination changes throughout its cycle, characterized by waxing and waning phases. Familiarize yourself with the crescent and gibbous shapes as the moon transitions from black at the New Moon to fully illuminated during the Full Moon. Use imaginative associations like “Wax on” to remember the waxing phases. Additionally, explore the fascinating events of solar and lunar eclipses as documented by NASA.

Moon Phases • Remember there are 4 main phases of Illumination: • New Moon = BLACK • 1st Quarter = ½ lit • Full Moon = fully illuminated • 3rd Quarter = ½ lit • 2 descriptive phases: Waxing and Waning • Crescent (Waxing crescent, waning crescent) • Gibbous (Waxing gibbous, waning gibbous) • Begin cycle with New Moon and go counterclockwise.
Waxing CrescentGaining illumination Think Karate Kid, “Wax on” Or Light on the right, Growing every night.
Waning GibbousLosing illumination but still more than ½ lit The moon is fading when it’s waning.
