  1. Compacted Math:Your 6th Grade Year 6th Grade Parent Information

  2. What does my child need to be successful? • Willingness to ask questions!!! • Willingness to access resources • Motivation • Responsibility • Honesty • Love of learning • Desire for challenge • Ability to plan

  3. What is it? • A program which allows high-ability math students to accelerate through the math curriculum within their regular classroom and during Excel • Students complete 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade curriculum in two years (6th and 7th grades).

  4. How do Students get into CM?

  5. What are the goals and how are they set? • Goal setting takes place bi-weekly and quarterly. Two week checks are individualized by teacher (generally 14 objectives). Quarterly goals are the same for all students. • 6th Grade = objective 219 by the end of the year • Students who end the year at or above 219, will be placed in the 7th grade advanced math class

  6. How is CM graded? • Students are graded bi-weekly by averaging the practices and tests of mastered objectives. Reports are sent to parents regarding the number of objectives mastered and current grade every two weeks. Sign and Return. • Grades will be entered on Powerschool. • Practices are done in multiple choice. Tests are done in free response. Exercises are done in free response. • Grade minimum: no less than 80% of averaged tests and practices. This is one of the three strikes for early exit.

  7. What is the homework expectation? • Amounts of homework depend on individual progress. Students have access to homework daily. • Teachers monitor time allowed for all CM work on the management system. *practice = scanned within 1 day *tests = scanned within 2 days *exercises are never scored until the teacher checks for 100% accuracy • Tests are not allowed to be taken home and should be completed in supervised area. There is no teacher assistance or use of resources unless specified by teacher.

  8. How do students receive help? • Students must refer to their resources first: book, classzone, ask another student, formula sheet) • They can ask for help during class when students are working independently and teacher isn’t teaching a lesson. • Receive direct instruction and help during Excel. • Before or after school and during guided study.

  9. How do they move onto Algebra? • Master all of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade curriculum by the end of the 7th grade year. • Required to go to summer school if a student does not master all three years of math in two years. • Some students finish all three years in 6th grade and are then placed in algebra as a 7th grader.

  10. How are students exited early from the program? • Students, along with parents, can opt out of program at any time with teacher verification. • 3 strike system: after 3 strikes the student is exited from the program. Strikes are given if: a. Student does not meet objective minimum every two weeks b. Student does not meet quarterly checkpoint goals c. Student does not meet grade minimum every two weeks (no less than 80% of averaged tests and practices) • Strikes will be communicated with parents each time they occur, along with student conference.
