  1. Attraction! LES FOR THE 1ST CYCLE

  2. Pedagogical Intention • Initiate the student to: • What magnetism is; • Elaborating an hypothesis; • Noting results; • Formulating a conclusion; • Making a model.

  3. Activity 1 • Discovering that the magnet can exert its influence through various materials. • Adequately define and situate the hypothesis with the students.

  4. Activity 1 - Hypotheses

  5. Activity 1- continued - Hypotheses

  6. Activity 2 • Discover the usefulness of magnets in everyday life.

  7. Activity 3 • Discover by experimentation, that magnets attract objects that contain iron, nickel or cobalt.

  8. Activity 4 • Discover the interaction between two magnets and visualise what a magnetic field is (at the discretion of the teacher). Video Images drawn from: http://www.sciencetech.technomuses.ca/francais/schoolzone/basesuraimant.cfm#whatare

  9. Activity 5 • Initiate the students to fabrication. • Make an animated character using magnetism. • The activity requires some materials preparation on the teacher’s part. • Particular attention is paid to foreseeable difficulties in the teacher’s guide.

  10. Activity 5

  11. The students in action

  12. Activity 6 • Discover that magnets have different powers of attraction.

  13. Validation • Situation experienced in two 1st grade classes: weekly visits The fifth activity was more difficult: less concentration and motivation. • Situation experienced in a 2nd grade class: daily visits The fifth activity was easier.

  14. Thanks! • To the 1st grade students at école Fernand-Seguin and the 2nd grade class of école Édouard-Laurin as well as to Nathalie Chartrand and Colombe Habel.
