Simile “ I stood watching as the shouting guards herded the man towards the gate, which opened like the mouth of a dragon.” P.21 This is comparing the prison gates opening to a dragon’s mouth opening. Eulinda is in awe of what she is seeing when the gates open. She is scared of what she is seeing and is comparing it to a dragon’s mouth opening.

  3. Personification “Of course we still had Octavius, but his bones creaked.” P.3 This shows that Octavius is very old and weak. Octavius’s bones do not actually creak but it’s telling that he’s not very able-bodied any more.

  4. Overstatement “That man (Mr. Hampton) ain’t got a thought in his head anymore that she (Mistis) doan’ put there.” P.45 This overstatement shows Mr. Hampton doesn’t really make decisions for him self and lets Mistis boss him around. It shows that Mr. Hampton is a weak man that doesn’t take charge.

  5. Metaphor “After they built the prison a mile from Pond Bluff, game got scarcer than horns on a rabbit.” P. 20 I think this means that the game wasn’t too common because as it says in the metaphor “scarcer than horns on a rabbit”. And horns on a rabbit are not common at all. This means that the prison had a big effect on Pond Bluff because it was so close.

  6. Symbolism “He’s (Neddy) still got it, (the ring) Eulinda. He says he’s gonna hold on to it, ‘til after the war. Then sell it to take you and him when you go west.” P. 12 This symbolizes hope for Eulinda of being free and reuniting with Neddy. This shows the ring is very important to the story.
