  1. Impact of Global Warming • Sea level rising • Altered precipitation pattern • Change in soil moisture content • Increase in some extreme weather • More flood more drought • Alteration of natural climate cycles like El Nino • Changes in the species ranges • Changes in the ocean circulation • Melting of Arctic permafrost

  2. (a). Impacts of Sea Level Rise (SLR) • Loss of Land • Half of the human population lives in coastal areas or already below sea level. • Bangladesh , New Orleans and Netherlands • In Bangladesh Half a meter rise would Submerge the part of the country- loss of agricultural land • and displace large population- Loss of lives 2. Economy in loss due to loss of agricultural land. 3. Overall SLR adds to the highest tides and storm surges, increase the risk of flooding over much greater areas.

  3. Impacts of SLR 4. Intrusion of the salt water into the underground water table. This Leads to reduced agricultural productivity and worsen the growing scarcity of freshwater resources. • Bangladesh, Florida and Neil delta 5. SLR may submerge or flood the coastal wetlands, where the interplay between freshwater and salt water help to nourish rich ecosystem that act as the nurseries for much marine life.

  4. Contribution to SLR • Melting land base ice • Thermal expansion of water due to increase in the temperature. • Melting permafrost (deposition of the sediments by river flows and human alteration of hydro cycle. • Note: Floating ice will not change the SL.

  5. Ocean Acidification • Ocean take large amount CO2 from the atmosphere and there by reduce the CO2 level in the atmosphere. • When CO2 dissolve in water it forms carbonic acid (H2CO3).

  6. Impacts of Ocean acidification • Adding CO2 decreases the amount of carbonate available for marine organism. • Carbonate is what marine organism use to build shells and other structure. (rigid Skelton of coral ) • Lower the oceans pH value. (More acidic) • Some species of high latitude marine may not survivedue to increase acidity in the ocean water. Such organisms are at the bottom of the food chains, the populations of larger marine species could suffer as well.
