  1. Simple Machines Chapter 4: Section 3

  2. Simple machine – does work with only one movement • Compound machine – a machine made of a combination of simple machines

  3. Inclined Plane • Is a flat, sloped surface Uses: • To decrease the amount of force needed to lift an object over a certain height. • Remember: The longer the inclined plane, the smaller the force needed

  4. Wedge • Is an inclined plane that moves • It changes the direction of the applied force • Examples: Teeth, axe, knife

  5. Screw • Is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder or post • The screw threads form the inclined plane • The more tightly the threads are together, the easier it is to turn the screw

  6. Lever • Is any rigid rod or plank that pivots about a point • Fulcrum – is the point about which the lever pivots Rod Or Plank Fulcrum

  7. First class lever: Output Force Input Force Examples: A seesaw or a pair of scissors

  8. Second Class Lever Output Force Input Force Example: A wheelbarrow

  9. Third class lever: Input Force Output Force Examples: Baseball bat or a rake

  10. Wheel & Axle • Are two circular objects of different sizes that rotate together

  11. Sometimes the input force turns the wheel and the axle exerts the output force • Ex. Doorknob, steering wheel, screwdriver • Other times the input force turns the axle and the wheel exerts the output force • Ex. Fan, Ferris wheel, wheel

  12. Pulley • Is a grooved wheel with a rope or chain wrapped around it. • Fixed = attached to an overhead structure and changes the direction of the force you exert • Moveable = attached to the object being lifted and allows you to exert a smaller force • Pulley system = combination of fixed and moveable pulleys

  13. How many simple machines can you spot?
