  2. Proposal • Do Algebra 1 students need to take a whole year of Algebra 1? • Currently they do, if they score under 70% on the Algebra Proficiency Exam. Based on research, students could master their weak areas in Algebra and move on. Consider Kahn Academy’s Method of mastery before advancement. Research has shown that students using Cognitive Tutor Algebra I: Demonstrate an 85% better performance on assessments of complex mathematical problem solving and thinking Have a 70% greater likelihood of completing subsequent Geometry and Algebra II courses Achieve 15-25% better scores on the SAT and Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test

  3. Current Conditions • EHS Admits 165 Freshmen each year. • 1/3 Will re-take Algebra 1 • Another 1/3 will need some remedial study from Algebra1’s curriculum. • EHS has teachers for a Mastery of Algebra class. • EHS has Rooms and Scheduled time. • We have the talent to develop the course.

  4. Framework for Success • Collect data • Compare curriculum concepts • Develop a Course Framework • Math Dept. Presents to the Academic Governance Committee. • The Head of School reviews • We plan for Day 1 • Review at end of first year • Revise, Repeat or Reject

  5. Challenges Perception: students parents other departments Resources Development of curriculum Time Communicate for Success Preplan – Mathematics Department meeting Pre-launch – Admissions Process, Windows, Website Current Events, In Service announcement, Academic Governance. Post Launch – Windows to Parents, 5 X 7 Cards, College Guidance parent meetings. Bach to School Night Review – School Quarterly Magazine

  6. Benefits Successful Confident Prepared for College Less Students bored Repeating Algebra1 Solid Foundation

  7. What will success look like? • Geometry classes with fewer problems related to mechanics • Parents Positive Future • Students more confidence • More successful first year at College • Better use of time for Mathematics Faculty • Fast Diffusion Rates.
