Byzantine Empire. Part 2 (by Jackie and Hanna) A new culture The Emperor Justinian. A New Culture. They did not call them the Romans even though many were descended from a Roman family. Their language was Greek. They were Christians, but did not follow the Catholic faith of the Romans.

  2. A New Culture • They did not call them the Romans even though many were descended from a Roman family. • Their language was Greek. • They were Christians, but did not follow the Catholic faith of the Romans.

  3. Women in the Byzantium Society • Some women in the Byzantine society protected their virtue by entering convents. • Women and girls were not allowed in the outside world.

  4. Women in the Byzantium Society 2 • Women could travel outside the place, but only with a servant with them. • Aristocratic women were usually very well educated, but were usually not allowed to study classical literature. • Anna Comnena, a daughter of Emperor Alecuis the first, was very well educated wrote a history of her father’s reign.

  5. The Emperor Justinian • Emperor Justinian became an emperor at age 44 • He spent a lot of time studying about music, architecture, and politics. • He wanted his people to be comfortable and successful.

  6. The Emperor Justinian 2 • He made changed in a lot of things to make the lives of his people to be better. • One of the reforms had to do with the rights of women.

  7. Byzantine law & Aristocratic Society • Byzantine emperors were responsible to establish righteousness. • Justinian Code: Collection of 10 books, which holds the establishments that was used from the time when Emperor Hadrian was in power.

  8. Byzantine law & Aristocratic Society 2 • Corpus juriscivilis,: “body of civil law”hadbasic outline of the Byzantine law. • Justinian’s code was rediscovered and was used as the main source of legal structures from Western Europe by the 1100s.

  9. Art and Architecture • In churches, cathedrals, and brutal chambers, there were a lot of mosaics. • The architects built churches by placing a round dome over a square foundation. • Byzantine architecture influence all over Europe and Asia. This is a mosaic shows Apollinaris, the patron saint of the church of San Apillinaire.

  10. Aristocratic Society • Law codes were applied to everyone but discrimination still existed then • “Nobility” were defined mainly by the political offices • Positions based on MERIT • your status can also be obtained by birth • Some people only marries people who has the same social status as them
