  1. 30.2 Heart pumps blood throughout the circulatory system

  2. You heart beats an average of 70 times per minute, over 100,000 times a day! Blood flows along two pathways: 1)Pulmonary circuit - carries oxygen depleted blood from the heart to the lungs and oxygen-rich blood back to the heart. 2)Systemic circuit - carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body and oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart. oxygen rich blood leaves the left side of heart through the aorta. The aorta then supplies the oxygen rich blood to all of the body.

  3. Anatomy of the Heart Blood enters the heart through the atria and exits through the ventricles. Valves keep the blood from flowing in the wrong direction. (Note that the left and right sides of the heart refer to the person's left and right sides, causing them to appear reversed in this face-on view.)

  4. Heart • -a muscular pump located between your lungs • -has a sac called the pericardium that encloses it. • -consists of 4 chambers • atria- 2 upper chambers - receive blood returning to the heart • ventricles- 2 lower chambers -pump blood out of the heart. • Valves - flaps of tissue in the heart, prevent blood from flowing backward. With each heartbeat, the valves open allowing blood to flow through. when the close, the blood is prevented from flowing back. The “lubdupp” sound is when the valves snap shut.

  5. Blood Pressure What is it? When the ventricles contract, they increase pressure on the blood. The resulting force that blood exerts against the artery walls is called blood pressure. The force drives blood through the arteries and into the capillaries

  6. How is blood pressure measured? Blood Pressure is represented by two numbers such as 120\70. (stated 120 over 70). -The first number (120) is called the Systolic pressure - the highest recorded pressure in an artery when the ventricles contract (systoles). -The second number is Diastolic pressure, the lowest recorded pressure in an artery during the relaxation phase of the heartbeat. (diastole). -The above numbers represent a healthy young person’s blood pressure. -Anything over 140/90 is considered high and can lead to cardiovascular disease and other health problems.
