  1. El Dorado Hills Wastewater Treatment Plant

  2. First Phase : Headworks Material unsuitable for plant digestion is removed from the influent. Large aerators underneath the Headworks push these materials to the surface of the water

  3. Headworks : Bar Screener • All influent enters the Headworks and large physical debris is removed by the Bar Screener • This debris contains plastics, paper, balls, wood, rocks, or large solid wastes.

  4. 2nd Phase : Primary Clarifier • Floating grease and scum are skimmed off the surface. • Solids are allowed to settle to form sludge. • The water takes on a very murky brown color and is quite thick. Note: the life preserver near the tank. Anybody for a swim?

  5. Primary Clarifier : Scum Box • Scum (grease, oil, plastics, etc.) are scraped from the settling tank surface and placed inside the SCUM BOX

  6. 4th Phase : DAFT (Dissolved Air Flotation Thickener) The DAFT rake scrapes the thickened solid waste and pumps it to the press where excess water is removed. The DAFT process adds oxygen and a resin to thicken the solid material. This material is removed, pressed and transported to either Rancho Murrieta grass farm or feed lots.

  7. 3rd Phase : Aeration • Water and sludge material are then aerated. • Oxygen allows bacteria and protozoa to digest the solid organic wastes. • Edges are misty because chlorine is added to control digesting populations.

  8. 5th Phase : Secondary Clarifier This water appears very clean. most of the sludge has settled and a surface scrapper removes any large particles left in the water.
