  1. Volunteer Programme 2015Planting seeds for transformation

  2. The Earthchild Project offers volunteer opportunities to locals and internationals. We train and place volunteers to help grow both volunteers and the children we work with. We work in 7 primary schools (with kids aged 6 – 13 years old) in two townships in Cape Town – Lavender Hill in the Cape Flats and Khayelitsha. Our approach to education is holistic and integrated with the schools curriculum. We do this mainly through yoga and meditation, and permaculture, hikes and environmental education.

  3. What We Offer We offer the opportunity to meet and learn from our inspiring earthchildren, while learning about our holistic approach to education, yoga and meditation, worm farming and permaculture, the environment and more. It is an opportunity to be involved in a positive and uplifting initiative, while experiencing the unique way in which a sensitive NGO works. We also offer quarterly workshops in facilitation skills and tools for working with children. And, of course, it is an opportunity to join our Earthchild Project family!

  4. Volunteer opportunities: • Lead or assist after-school clubs: Yoga Club and Eco-Warriors Club (extramural) • Assist with hikes (two Saturdays a month) • Assist classes on organic vegetable gardening and worm farming (during school hours) • Assist classes on yoga and meditation (during school hours) • Assist the school holiday leadership program (during school holidays) • Assist with enviro-education outings (during school hours)

  5. Time Commitment We generally ask for a minimum commitment of 3 months from start to end of the school term or for the full duration of the holiday program. This provides the children with a sense of continuity. If this is not possible, please let us know and we can discuss alternatives. • School terms for 2015 are: • Term 1:  Jan 21 - Apr 1 • Holiday Program 1: Apr 7 - 10 • Term 2: Apr 13 - Jun 26 • Holiday Program 2: Jun 29 - Jul 3 • Term 3: Jul 20 - Oct 2 • Holiday Program: Oct 5 - 9 • Term 4: Oct 12 - Dec 12

  6. Language All Earthchild Project staff speak English. The children at Lavender Hill speak English and Afrikaans. The children in Khayelitsha speak mainly Xhosa and a little English. Sometimes language can be a challenging barrier but there are always older children who are able to help with translation. All Volunteers are expected to speak fluent or advanced level English.

  7. Volunteers do not receive a stipend. If volunteers require materials for their work, donations or fundraising must be done in their own capacity. AccommodationEarthchild Project does not provide accommodation. However, we have several partners that we can recommend for accommodation should you require it. TransportVolunteers are responsible for organizing their own transport to and from the schools. For Lavender Hill we recommend catching the train to Steenberg station. For Khayelitsha we recommend driving your own car or car-pooling with other volunteers. FoodVolunteers are not provided with food while at the schools and are requested to bring their own lunch and snacks. There is drinkable tap water available at all the schools.

  8. Next steps... After submitting your volunteer application, we will have a brief phone or Skype call with you to talk through any questions you have and give you a brief overview of the program. Once this is complete we will schedule an interview with the relevant coordinator at the schools (either in Khayelitsha or Lavender Hill).   If successful and if we're all still enthusiastic, your application will be successful and the volunteer program will commence. .
