  1. Endangered Species and Resources in Tropical Rainforests An Interdisciplinary WebQuest for Middle School Students By: Susan Duncan and Maria Kinane

  2. Introduction • Tropical Rainforests are home to almost half of the Earth’s animal species. Unfortunately, these species and resources are being depleted while you read. Scientists fear that Tropical Rainforests will vanish altogether within the next four decades. Along with the destruction of Tropical Rainforests is the destruction of innocent animal species.

  3. Become Part of the Tropical Rainforest • Imagine that you are an endangered animal living in the Rainforest. You and your family are in danger of dying. • You desperately need to save yourself and your family. • You know that if more people were informed about the depletion of Tropical Rainforests and the destruction of precious animals both can be saved.

  4. Accept the Challenge of Saving the Rainforests - Task • You will form groups with a minimum of three members and a maximum of five members. • Each group will have one member who will take the form of endangered animal and research it for the purpose of informing the public about their lives, habitat, characteristics, eating habits, and why they are endangered. • One group member will become an investigative reporter digging up the facts. • There will also be one scientist working with all groups who will be the expert on the endangered animals and ecosystem, and will collect data as evidence. • Each group will: research the websites connected to their area. • http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/geography/ecosystems/rainforest2rev1.shtml

Process • In this WebQuest those who take on the form of an endangered animal will research the life and facts about their animal for a public presentation. • The future of the animal group relies upon getting the information and facts to the human population so they will know what they can do to help save your species. • The scientist will inform us about what Tropical Rainforests are and what they do for us. He/She will teach us about the resources. Things to think about… • By learning about endangered animals that live in Tropical Rainforests you can help save thousands of lives and acres of land. • What do you think is the most important information that you learned about your animal and the environment it lives in? • What are people already doing to help save the Rainforests and endangered species? • What can you do every day to help save endangered species that live in the Rainforests? • Can you develop an organization that is committed to saving endangered species in the Rainforests?

Evaluation • Total= 100 Points • 20 Points- Team Work: Animal, Scientist, and Investigative Reporter work together and participate. • 20 Points-Correctly explaining life, characteristics, eating habits, and habitat of species • 20 Points-Thorough explanation of why animal is endangered and Tropical Rainforests are threatened. • 20 Points- Expertise on what is and can be done to help save Tropical Rainforests and endangered species that live there. • 20 Points- Quality Presentation
