  1. Slave Masters ‘ ‘Just come to tell you, massa, that I've labored for you for forty years now. And I done earned my keep. You can sell me, lash me, or kill me. I aint caring which, but you cant make me work no more.’’ Certain slaves approached their masters about being retired. Many of the slave owners, as the one from this passage let the slaves go if they had been working on the plantation for a good amount of time. In this case, the master retired the slave.

  2. The Slaves Tempers The Slaves Tempers Some slaves, especially the younger ones, used to get mad at the masters or masters children who they referred to as little Marster or Mistress. The children would talk back to the owner and in a bad situation almost kill them. What kept the southern slave master safe was the slaves thought of getting into severe trouble.

  3. Slaves Fight Back There were stories of the slaves murdering and fighting their masters. This was common. A man names Solomon Northup had come close to killing his master latter with an axe. His explanation was ‘‘Life is dear to every living thing; the worm that crawls upon the ground will struggle for it. At that moment it was dear to me, enslaved and treated as I was’’.
