  1. Ignatius of Loyola and the Jesuits

  2. What happened? • The society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, was founded to return Europe to the Catholic Church. They were recognized by the Pope as a new religious group. They used education as a method of spreading Catholic beliefs, and they sent missionaries to foreign lands, like Asia and the Americas. However, they had limited success in winning converts to Christianity. They also tried to spread Catholicism to all of Europe, combat the protestant reformation, and strengthen Catholicism in places like Hungary.

  3. Who was involved? • Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish nobleman and soldier who was wounded in battle by a cannonball to his leg. During his recovery, he came closer to God, and later founded the society of Jesus, or the Jesuits. This group was recognized by Pope Paul III as an independent group later on. You've done good, Ignatius, you've done good.

  4. How does this event show religious disunity in Europe? • The Jesuits attempted to return Europe to the Catholic Church, and keep Protestantism from spreading, which proves that North and South Europe were divided over religion. I hate you. You aren’t so fun yourself

  5. No pagans were harmed in the making of this show • Images from Google • The pope Picture of Hungary
