What happened?
  • Because of the effects of Jesuits, the catholic church started to regain power against the Protestants
  • Ignatius, ran the Jesuits like a military and made them focus on education
  • Jesuits made it clear that obedience was needed in the church

  • Ignatius was a Spanish noble who's military carrier had ended abruptly when he was wounded in battle
  • The soldier needed something to occupy his time until he could walk again, so he read the only material available to him in the castle—biographies of saints
  • the ideas in the books soon filled his mind with the desire to find a religious purpose, and he began to see religious visions.
  • The books and visions inspired Ignatius to change his life—to become a “soldier of God” rather than a “soldier of man.” Ignatius later founded a religious teaching order still active today—the Jesuits
